Weighted grades explained

Relative (simple) weights

When each assignment has a weight, overall grade is:

Σ(scoreᵢ × weightᵢ) / Σ(weightᵢ)

Weights do not have to add to 100. Doubling every weight leaves the result unchanged.

Category weights

Many syllabi use categories (Homework 20%, Exams 50%, Final 30%). First average the scores inside each category, then combine category averages with those weights (they should sum to 100).

Drop lowest N

GradeKite’s category mode drops the N lowest percentage scores inside a category before averaging. At least one score is kept. Some learning systems drop by raw points instead — match your syllabus.

Example: Homework scores 100%, 80%, 90% with drop 1 → drop 80% → average (100+90)/2 = 95%. If Homework is 20% of the course, that category contributes 95 × 0.20 toward the overall (alongside other categories).
