How GPA is calculated
On a 4.0 scale, each letter maps to grade points. Multiply by credit hours to get quality points, then:
GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) / Σ(credits)
Example
| Letter | Points | Credits | Quality |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 4.0 | 3 | 12.0 |
| B+ | 3.3 | 4 | 13.2 |
| A− | 3.7 | 3 | 11.1 |
Total quality 36.3 ÷ 10 credits = 3.63 GPA.
Institution differences
Some schools use A+ = 4.3, omit plus/minus, or weight honors courses. Edit the letter map in the GPA calculator to match your registrar.
